Amtrak Discounts

How to Find the Best Ticket Prices

Whenever I search for Amtrak discounts and best ticket prices, I always start by checking out a few of my favorite third party websites and forums.

Amtrak's reduced ticket prices can come in many forms including the types of memberships you may have (AAA, NARP), deals you may be entitled to (Veteran, Student, Seniors) or even when you purchase the tickets. I'll go through each of them below to find you your best deal.

Best Amtrak Third Party Coupon Websites

My favorite site I always check first not only for Amtrak discounts but for any type of online purchase is RetailMeNot.com.

When you bring up the website, all you have to do is type in the website address of the online store you're trying to get discounts for. In this case, I would type in www.amtrak.com.

From there, you will be greeted with the online store's (Amtrak Coupon Codes) RetailMeNot webpage. Each coupon, whether reliable, active, or unreliable will be listed with either a coupon code, printable coupon or instructions on how to use the coupon.

The best thing about using RetailMeNot.com is the active community and the users that comment on the status of each coupon; whether it worked or not for them. Sometimes even if a coupon is expired or unreliable, I will try it anyway and have found that it infact still works.

Another way to find Amtrak discounts and the best ticket prices is heading over to one of the main forums dedicated to this subject.

Forums, or message boards, are great as people can go back and forth asking questions and getting responses about whatever they may need.

The FlyerTalk forum is made for those 'frequent flyer' travelers looking for the best deals out there but also has discounts for the casual travelers as well. Clicking on the link will bring up the Amtrak forum page with discussions about the Amtrak discounts and deals travelers have found, questions they may have regarding prices, guest rewards and a 'sticky thread' at the top with current promotions and discounts. A 'sticky thread' just means that the information is so good that it is staying there and not in chronological order like all the other posts.

The last third party website I will take a look at for finding Amtrak discounts is RailServe.com.

Just in case I miss anything, RailServe points out all of the discounts available for each type of Amtrak passenger (Student, International Student, Veteran, AAA member, NARP member, Children, Seniors, Military, Disabilities).

Check out all of these Amtrak discounts and all of the other discount information on RailServe's Amtrak Coupons page.

Straight From the Source

If for some reason I was unlucky finding deals on third party websites, I will go straight to the source to find all other specials that may not be found elsewhere.

Amtrak continuously updates its "Deals" page so not finding some sort of discount or cheap price is usually out of the question. Among the deals listed on Amtrak's website are:

Advertised Specials: The latest promotions and deals current to this time of year. In order for these deals to work, you may need to purchase by the date listed.

Passenger Discounts: These various discounts are dependant on your status as a traveler (Student, International Student, Veteran, AAA member, NARP member, Children, Seniors, Military, Disabilities). Some of these may require you to book three days in advance of your travel date.

Rail Passes: The Amtrak discounts on the Rail Passes page are for people looking to travel for an extended period of time (15, 30, 45-day travel options).

Multi-Ride Tickets: These deals allow you to ride the train multiple times within a set amount of time and can be found on most short-distance routes.

Regional Tour Packages: Some tour operators have partnered with Amtrak to offer vacation packages, check these out here.

Amtrak Vacations: Looking to plan a vacation? Let Amtrak help you out with their Amtrak Vacations Specialists. They can help you set up all accommodations including hotels, car rental, sightseeing, airfare, and of course train tickets. Choose where you want to go, how long you want to stay and let Amtrak do the rest!
